1.  How to Enter Hainan Visa Free

Travelers holding ordinary passports who are eligible under Hainan’s 59 Country Visa Free Entry Policy should register at the port of entry on arrival or with a Hainan travel agency in advance in order to enter Hainan visa free. These travelers may stay in Hainan for 30 days (counted from 00:00 on the day after entry).

Note: Travelers from the 59 visa free entry eligible countries may travel from or through Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, or any other place outside Mainland China with a direct flight to Hainan. 


2.  List of 59 Countries eligible for Visa Free Entry to Hainan:

Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Norway, Ukraine, Italy, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Monaco, and Belarus. 


3.  The maximum length of stay for visa free travelers in Hainan is 30 days.


4.  Travelers who need to travel to other parts of China must apply for a visa.

Visa free travelers who need to extend their stay in Hainan or travel to other parts of mainland China must apply at the Hainan Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Department in advance.

Visa application locations: Visa free travelers in Haikou, Sanya, Yangpu, Wenchang, Qionghai, or Chengmai may apply for a visa at the local Exit & Entry Administration Office. Travelers in other Hainan locations must apply at the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Hainan Provincial Public Security Department.


5. Legal obligations and Responsibilities

According to the "Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China", the "Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Administration of Entry and Exit of Aliens" and other relevant laws and regulations, visa free travelers staying in hotels in Hainan Province must register with their passports upon arrival.


A) Travelers must register within the specified time limits.

When staying at hotels in China, international travelers must register with their passports at the hotel upon arrival. When staying in other locations, the traveler or host must register the traveler with the public security office responsible for the district within 24 hours of arrival. Those who fail to register on time shall be given a warning and fined.


B) Travelers must leave China prior to the expiry of their duration of stay.

Travelers or residents in China and must not engage in activities inconsistent with their purpose of stay or residence, and must leave China before their specified period of stay or residence expires. Those who reside in China illegally will be given a warning. Where circumstances are serious, they will be fined or detained.


Update: 

As of February 9th, 2024, citizens of the 59 Visa Free eligible countries may enter Hainan Province for commercial activities and trade, visit and exchange, and family reunions, receiving medical treatment, attending exhibitions, taking part in sporting events and other needs (excluding long-term working and studying) for up to 30 days without a visa. Foreign nationals who need to enter Hainan for the aforementioned purposes can enter through any open port in the province and remain in the province's administrative area during their stay periods (subject to the relevant provisions if applicable to mutual visa exemption agreements signed with China). Each entry period is calculated from 00:00 on the day following the day of entry. The existing policy of 30-day visa-free trips to Hainan for citizens of the aforementioned countries remains in effect.
